Fazendas de Almeirim
Last Week on the Road
My Epic Journey So Far
Today’s Weather Report
Ah, Fazendas de Almeirim! A balmy 12.46°C today, though it feels a smidge colder to my wee gnome toes. Clear sky above – a perfect canvas for my red pointy hat. Humidity? A manageable 56%. Keeps the beard nice and fluffy, it does. And the wind, whispering at 2.76 m/s, just enough to rustle my beard without toppling me over. After all, we gnomes are sturdy, but we’re not boulder! A gnome-inal day for traveling, I’d say!
Gnome-stopping in Vineyards!
As I set out from Marinhais, the morning mist was gently lifting, revealing an expansive landscape of olive groves and vineyards as far as my gnome eyes could see. The scent of the earth and greenery was intoxicating. But it wasn’t just the natural beauty that caught my eye; it was the people. The locals, working away in the fields, their faces telling a thousand stories of hard work, love for their land, and a deep-rooted connection to the earth.
One particular sight moved me profoundly. An old man, perhaps in his late seventies, tending to his vines with the tenacity of a man half his age. “O trabalho nunca termina, mas é o amor que nos sustenta.” He told me. That translates to “The work never ends, but it is love that sustains us.” This statement, so simple yet profound, reflected the essence of this region and its people.
As I moved on, the verdant scenery of Fazendas de Almeirim welcomed me. This town, with its rustic charm and friendly faces, was the perfect end to my day’s journey.
Having been on the road for 7 days, I’ve traveled 106.6 kilometers so far. From Alverca do Ribatejo to Benavente, from Marinhais to Fazendas de Almeirim, and now to Ponte de Sor, each place has offered a unique experience, a new story, and a lesson in life.
This journey, my friends, is not about the distance covered or the borders crossed. It’s about the hearts touched and the wisdom gained. As a famous Portuguese saying goes, “Não é o destino que importa, mas a viagem.” It’s not the destination that matters, but the journey.
Ate breve! That’s “see you soon” in Portuguese. Stay tuned for more of my adventures in this beautiful country!

Soup-erbly Stone-d in Fazendas!
A visit to Fazendas de Almeirim is incomplete without experiencing its renowned gastronomic culture. The city is famous for its Sopa da Pedra, a hearty traditional Portuguese soup. As I relished this delicious dish, I was reminded of the famous poet, Fernando Pessoa who once quipped, “A minha pátria é a língua portuguesa” (My homeland is the Portuguese language). Indeed, here in Fazendas, the language of food speaks volumes about the city’s vibrant culture and history.
Rocking the Pot in Fazendas
In Fazendas de Almeirim, a tradition that stands out is the Festa da Sopa da Pedra. Literally translating to “Stone Soup Festival”, it’s based on an old Portuguese tale where a hungry traveler convinces villagers to contribute to a soup that began with just a stone. The phrase “É só meter mais água na sopa” (Just add more water to the soup) encapsulates the spirit of this tradition, symbolizing communal effort and sharing. The soup, made with various meats, beans, and vegetables, is a staple of Portuguese cuisine. The festival is celebrated with music, dance, and, of course, lots of sopa da pedra. So, when in Fazendas de Almeirim, remember, the soup that began with a stone can feed a whole village!
See you tomorrow!
