Sobolevka
Last Week on the Road
My Epic Journey So Far
Today’s Weather Report
Day 288 in Sobolevka: The sky is as clear as my mind after a glass of gnome brew. Temperature’s a tidy 16.37°C but feels more like 15.05°C. That’s colder than a snowman’s nose! Humidity’s only 38%, leaving me drier than my humor. A breeze is blowing at 2.28 m/s, just enough to ruffle my beard. For a gnome, this weather is like a mild bath – just enough to clean the grime but not melt the paint! A perfect day for a traveling gnome, I must say. More of these, please!
Russian Around, Gnome-Stop!
The journey was a fascinating one, as I traversed through the dense Russian forests, their beauty, tranquility, and occasional grizzly bear. It was a sight to behold, the sun dappling through the leaves, an orchestra of birdsong filling the air. But the highlight of my journey? It was an unexpected encounter with a pack of wild reindeers, trotting along in the snow, their antlers glinting in the sunlight. A sight that reminds one of the Russian proverb – “Всё хорошо, что хорошо кончается” (All is well that ends well).
I’ve now been on the road for 288 days, and have covered an impressive 8545.0 kilometers on foot. On my journey, I’ve visited the picturesque towns of Solominka, Bashmakovo, and Lermontovo, and now, I find myself in Sobolevka. Each town, a story unto itself, each mile, a verse in the song of my journey.
Let me share with you a verse from a popular Russian song that goes – “У лукоморья дуб зелёный” (By the sea stands a green oak tree). It’s a beautiful reminder of the resilience and timeless beauty of nature, something I’m reminded of with every step I take.
As a traveling gnome, language changes are a constant companion. Although I didn’t cross a border on this leg of the journey, I’m always prepared for the linguistic surprises that may await around the next bend.
Remember, as the Russian philosopher Nikolai Berdyaev once said, “Каждый шаг вперёд есть победа” (Every step forward is a victory). So, until my next step, до свидания, my friends!

Sobolevka: Rachmaninoff’s Rustling Rhapsody!
The first thing that struck me about this city is its iconic architecture. Sobolevka is home to some of the oldest wooden churches in Russia, each one a testament to the craftsmanship of the old Russian masters. The intricate designs are more than just visually stunning; they tell tales of the city’s history and faith. As the Russians say, “Церковь – дом Божий” (The church is God’s house).
The second thing that fascinated me was the city’s deep-rooted love for music. The spirit of famous Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff seems to permeate the air. You can hear it in the subtle hum of the city, in the laughter of its people, even in the rustle of the trees. As Rachmaninoff once said, “Музыка – это откровение выше, чем мудрость и философия” (Music is an outburst of the soul, greater than wisdom and philosophy).
All in all, Sobolevka is a city that truly encapsulates the soul of Russia.
From ‘Pelmeni’ to ‘Honey’: A Sobolevka Feast!
Ah, Sobolevka, a place where the past meets the present in the most delicious way. The food scene here is a blend of traditional Russian cuisine with modern twists. You need to try pelmeni, local dumplings filled with meat, served with smetana (sour cream). The locals say, “Без сметаны, пельмени не вкусные” (Without sour cream, the pelmeni is not tasty). Another must-try is shchi, a hearty cabbage soup that warms your soul – “shchi da kasha – pishcha nasha” (shchi and porridge are our food). And of course, the famous Sobolevka honey. It’s said to be the sweetest you’ll ever taste. It’s not just food, it’s a cultural journey on a plate!
See you tomorrow!
