Today’s Weather Report

Day 268: A sunny and clear day in Zhukovskiy, just the type of weather a gnome prefers for his glossy paint. At 17.84°C, it’s a statuesque day, feels like 16.93°C, which is perfect for my ceramic skin. Humidity at 48%, my beard isn’t frizzing, thank heavens! Wind speed at 6 m/s, enough to rustle my pointy hat but not enough to roll me down the street. A gnome couldn’t ask for better weather!

From Russia with Gnome!

Здравствуйте, dear friends and fellow wanderers! This is your favorite gnome Oliver reporting from Zhukovskiy, Russia, a charming town located 36.0 kilometers southeast of the bustling city of Moscow.

For those who are counting, this little jaunt brings my total travel distance to a whopping 8010.7 kilometers! It’s hard to believe that I’ve been on the road for 268 days and counting. The cities I’ve visited in the past include, Naro-Fominsk, Podolsk, Moscow, and Bronnitsy.

Now, let’s talk about the journey. As I walked the road from Moscow to Zhukovskiy, a peculiar sight caught my eye. It was a group of locals, huddled around a giant statue of an airplane in the town square. I soon learned that Zhukovskiy is known as the “birthplace of Russian aviation”! Fascinating, isn’t it?

Here’s a little Russian phrase that seems apt for the moment, “Не все то золото, что блестит“. It translates to “Not all that glitters is gold”. A reminder that there’s more to a place than its famous landmarks.

As I continued my journey, I couldn’t help but hum a local song that goes, “Подмосковные вечера” or “Moscow Nights”. It’s a classic that perfectly captures the melancholic beauty of this region.

Now, let me leave you with a philosophical musing, a quote by the great Fyodor Dostoevsky, “Man only likes to count his troubles; he doesn’t calculate his happiness.” Let’s remember to appreciate every step of the journey, even the tiring and challenging parts.

Всего хорошего (All the best)! Until next time!

Jet Engines and Jeteés!

Ah, Zhukovskiy! Quite the city, I must say. First off, it’s named after the great Yuri Zhukovsky, the father of Russian aviation. An aerodynamic genius he was! A stroll around the city is incomplete without paying homage to the Zhukovsky Airfield. The airfield’s history is as rich as a bowl of Borscht. It’s where the first jet aircraft took off. Makes you feel like you’re walking on air, quite literally!

Now, let’s not forget about the city’s vibrant art scene. Zhukovskiy is a hotbed of ballet, inspired by the legendary Russian composer Tchaikovsky. There’s a phrase here, “Балет – это поэзия движения” (Ballet is the poetry of movement). Quite fitting, don’t you think?

To sum it up, Zhukovskiy is a city that flies high with its aeronautical history while gracefully pirouetting to the rhythm of its cultural heartbeat.

Looping Through Zhukovskiy’s Sky-History

Ah, the city of Zhukovskiy! Known as the cradle of Russian aviation. Legend has it that it was here, in 1909, that Pyotr Nesterov performed the first ever aerobatic maneuver, the Nesterov loop. As the locals say, “В воздухе рождаются чудеса” (Miracles are born in the air). I could almost hear the whoosh of old propellers as I roamed the streets. The city takes its name from the valiant wartime marshal Georgy Zhukov, a testament to its resilience and spirit. Truly, a flight into the annals of Russian history!

Zhukovskiy’s Gnome-tastic Gems

Gnome at POI 1

During my visit to Lestnitsa K Istochniku, I quickly learned that climbing its many stairs is no small feat for a gnome with legs shorter than a daisy. But, as I gasped for breath, I quipped, “Who needs a StairMaster when you have Mother Russia’s own natural gym!

See you tomorrow!
