My Epic Journey So Far
Today’s Weather Report
Day 265: Balabanovo, temperature a chilly 15.7°C (feels like 15.23°C). Broken clouds, just like my heart when I remember my cozy garden. Humidity’s 73%, I’m a gnome, not a duck! Wind speed, a measly 1.79 m/s. I’ve passed gas faster than that! It’s a good thing my paint doesn’t run or I’d be a Picasso masterpiece by now! Onward to Naro-Fominsk, hope they have gnome-sized raincoats.
From Zhukov to Balaba-whoa!
I’m your beloved wandering gnome, Oliver. Today, I have a tale to tell about my 17.4 kilometer trek from the heroic town of Zhukov to the industrious city of Balabanovo in the heart of Russia.
As I hiked through the Russian countryside, I was struck by the stark contrast between the hustle and bustle of Zhukov and the calm tranquility of Balabanovo. This difference, my friends, lies not just in the pace of life but also in the spirit of the people.
In Zhukov, the streets vibrated with the echoes of the town’s war-torn past. Named after the famed Marshal of the Soviet Union, Georgy Zhukov, the place feels like a battlefield frozen in time. As the locals say, “Слава не в богатстве, но в почете” (Glory is not in wealth, but in honor).
Balabanovo, on the other hand, is a city of peace, nestled amongst the greenery, with an atmosphere that makes the weary traveler feel at home. As I walked its quiet streets, a local song hummed by a passerby caught my ear, “Бала́баново, моя нежность” (Balabanovo, my tenderness).
This journey, although not the most arduous, was a stark reminder of Russia’s complex history and diverse landscapes. It also added 17.4 kilometers to my odometer, bringing the total to a whopping 7863.0 kilometers.
For those keeping track, I’ve been on the road for 264 days, and my recent stops include: Vorotynsk, Detchino, Zhukov, Balabanovo, and Naro-Fominsk.
Remember, my friends, as the Russian proverb goes, “Не ошибается тот, кто ничего не делает” (He who does nothing, makes no mistakes). But where’s the fun in that?
Until next time, друзья! (friends!)

Balabanovo: Domed & Tolstoyed!
Another fascinating thing about Balabanovo is its deep-rooted association with Russian literature. The city is believed to have inspired a setting in Leo Tolstoy’s ‘War and Peace’. As they say in Russia, “В каждом маленьком городе есть своя большая история” – Each small town has its own great story.
So, whether it’s the allure of sacred architecture or the echoes of literary grandeur, Balabanovo is a city that never ceases to captivate. As I wander its streets, I’m simply a gnome lost in a world of Russian enchantment.
Buzzing Through Balabanovo: Sweet Histories Uncovered!
Ah, Balabanovo, a city with a heart as big as Russia itself! The city was named after an old Russian noble named Balabanov. Legend has it that Balabanov was an avid beekeeper, whose honey was so divine, it was said to be “gifted by the gods!” In local language, “Мёд Балабанова был божественным даром!” (Balabanov’s honey was a divine gift!). Even today, Balabanovo’s honey stands testament to its sweet past, leaving every visitor with a taste of its rich history. So next time you’re in this charming city, remember, as locals say, “Каждый город хорош по-своему, но Балабаново лучше всех!” (Every city is good in its own way, but Balabanovo is the best of all!).
See you tomorrow!
