Today’s Weather Report

Day 260 in Sosensky: The sky is grumbling like my stomach before lunchtime – 18°C, feels like 17.63, but who’s counting? Not my beard, it’s too busy being a humidity sponge, soaking up the 67% moisture in the air. The wind’s going at 5 m/s, just enough to ruffle my red hat. I’m no weather gnome, but this overcast is making me feel like a mossy statue. I better find shelter before I start growing lichen! #GnomeProblems #CloudyWithAChanceOfMossballs

Goats, Gnomes, and Balalaikas!

Здравствуйте, my adventurous companions! This is your ever-trekking gnome, Oliver, reporting from the road once more. I’ve just completed a 46.4km journey from the quaint town of Ul’yanovo, Russia to the bustling city of Sosensky.

Settling down to rest my weary ceramic feet, I can’t help but reflect on a peculiar sight I witnessed. As I was passing through the verdant countryside, I noticed a peculiar sight: a babushka, an old Russian grandmother, tending to her herd of goats while expertly playing a balalaika. It was a sight to behold! The goats seemed to dance to her strumming, their bleats harmonizing with the music. A truly unique spectacle!

That’s the magic of travel, друзья мои (my friends). It’s the unexpected moments, the small surprises that make each journey worthwhile. I’m reminded of a Russian saying, “В гостях хорошо, а дома лучше” which translates to, “Visiting is good, but home is better.” But for a gnome like me, the world is my home and each new city a living room to explore.

In total, I’ve rambled, roamed, and rumbled for 259 days, covering a distance of 7715.7 kilometers. I’ve visited places like Krasnoe, Ul’yanovo (twice!), and Peremyshl’. Despite the grumbling in my ceramic belly and the occasional grumpiness, I can’t help but smile at the experiences I’ve collected. And I’m only getting started!

My journey continues, my friends, and with each step, I’m reminded of a verse from a local song, “По дороге с облаками” (Along the road with the clouds): “Я иду, иду по дороге, Облака надо мной, я иду, но не могу найти покоя” (I’m walking, walking along the road, The clouds are above me, I’m walking but I can’t find rest).

Until my next update, remember: The world is vast, and full of wonders. Keep exploring, keep wandering, and most importantly, keep laughing. Oliver, the traveling gnome, signing off! До свидания (Goodbye)!

Sosensky: Pushkin’s Whispering Statue!

Oh, dear wanderers! Let me tell you about the intriguing city of Sosensky. It’s a city that dances with the rhythm of history and culture, as the legendary Russian composer Tchaikovsky would with his symphonies!

My first stop was the Historical Museum of Sosensky. There, I encountered the city’s rich past, brimming with tales of resilience and triumph. It’s said, “История – это жизнь” (History is life). Couldn’t agree more!

Then, I hopped my way to the Monument of Pushkin. Ah, Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin! The Russian poet who could weave words into magic! Staring at his statue, I could almost hear him whisper, “Язык мой враг мой” (My tongue is my enemy).

Sosensky is not just a city, it’s a symphony composed by history, and played by culture. It’s a poem penned by time, and recited by its people. It’s a painting, brushed by tradition, and admired by the world. So, my dear wanderers, when are we visiting?

Apple-y Ever After in Sosensky

In beautiful Sosensky, I partook in the fascinating tradition of Apple Spas, a religious and folk holiday celebrating the apple harvest. Locals gather to bless the apples, saying “Спаси и сохрани!” (Save and preserve!). The blessed fruits are not to be eaten until after the first bite has been shared with a loved one. It’s a heartwarming sight to see families, young and old, sharing this moment. The day ends with traditional songs and dances. The Apple Spas in Sosensky is not just about apples, it’s about love, sharing, and community. Russians have a saying, “Вот это я понимаю!” (Now that’s what I understand!), and I couldn’t agree more.

See you tomorrow!
