Today’s Weather Report

Day 213 on the road and I’ve landed in Matca, where the sun apparently studied at the University of Roasting Gnomes. At 34.54°C, but feeling like 32.89°C, it’s like being in a gnome-sized sauna. With a clear sky as my only shelter, I’m turning a shade of red that would make a tomato blush! The 23% humidity is doing nothing to cool me down and the wind, a lazy 2.06 m/s, can’t be bothered to blow my hat off. If I had eyebrows, they’d be sweatier than a slug in a salt mine. Time to find a shady mushroom!

Romanian Rambles: Gnome-tastic Weavings!

Bună ziua, dear travelers! It’s your favorite globe-trotting gnome, Oliver, reporting from the picturesque landscapes of Romania. After a rewarding stay in Suraia, I embarked on a 23.5km journey to the charming village of Matca.

This journey, though not the longest, was filled with simple pleasures. The vibrant sunflower fields that line the roads, the sweet scent of summer in the air, and the gentle rustle of the wind through the wheat fields… it felt like I was walking through a painting. Now, let me tell you about a fascinating sight I encountered.

Halfway through my journey, I came upon an elderly woman, hunched over a loom, weaving intricate patterns with her deft fingers. The threads danced beneath her touch, forming a tapestry of stories. It reminded me of an old Romanian proverb: “Fiecare are felul lui de a țese.” (Everyone has their way of weaving). Just like this woman, each one of us is weaving our own story, adding to the grand tapestry of life.

So here I am, in Matca, adding another stitch to my tale. From Șuțești to Ciorăști, then to Suraia and now Matca, it’s been a whirlwind of experiences. I’ve traveled a staggering 6346.8 kilometers in 214 days. The memories made, the cultures explored… it’s been nothing short of an adventure.

With each step, I cross not only borders but also language barriers. From the poetic Romanian phrases to the heartfelt local songs, each word adds to my understanding of these cultures. As they say in Romania, “Cine călătorește mult, învață mult.” (He who travels much, learns much).

So, as I sign off for today, remember to weave your story, one thread at a time. Until next time, la revedere! (Goodbye!)

Matca: Frescoes & Funky Beats!

Ah, Matca, a jewel nestled in the Romanian countryside! Firstly, let’s talk about the local music. A famous composer from here is Mihai Eminescu. His music is a delightful fusion of traditional Romanian tunes and modern vibes. As the locals would say, “Este muzică pentru suflet” – it’s music for the soul!

Secondly, the city boasts a rich history dating back to the Dacians. The grandeur of the past is evident in the architecture, particularly the Church of St. Nicholas, with its stunning frescoes. “Este o operă de artă în sine“, it’s a work of art in itself!

To sum it up in local parlance, Matca este “un loc de suflet și oaza de cultură” – a place of soul and an oasis of culture.

Matca: Mighty Mini-Miracle!

Ah, Matca, a quaint village in the heart of Romania’s region of Moldova. It’s small, but don’t let size fool you. It’s home to a rich history, the crown jewel being the Church of the Holy Archangels. Built in the 18th century, it’s a testament to Moldovan architecture and resilience. The Moldovan phrase, “Dimensiunea nu definește valoarea“, or “Size doesn’t define value”, perfectly captures the essence of Matca. The church survived numerous historical upheavals, standing proud as a beacon of faith and unity. It’s not just a piece of history, it’s the heart of Matca.

Matca’s Marvels: A Gnome’s Glimpse

Gnome at POI 1

My visit to the Crucea de la Chicera was quite the spectacle! I spent half the day scaling the monument, only to discover that I’d been climbing the vendor’s hot dog stand next to it. Let’s just say, I’m the only gnome on record to have an intimate encounter with a Romanian sausage at a historic site!

See you tomorrow!
