My Epic Journey So Far
Today’s Weather Report
Day 207: “Feel the burn!” isn’t just a workout mantra today, it’s Otopeni’s weather report! At 35.29°C, it feels like I’m being slow-roasted in a gnome-sized tandoori oven – perfect if you fancy gnome kabobs! Clear skies mean no shade for this gnomad, and with humidity at a measly 26%, I’m drier than a martini at a James Bond convention. The wind, a gentle 3.09 m/s puff, is as refreshing as a dragon’s sneeze. Word of advice: If you spot a grumpy, sunburned gnome hitchhiking, please offer him a lift…and perhaps a cold pint! #
Otopeni Odygnomey!
My small feet recently carried me on a 15.7-kilometer journey from the buzzing city of Bucharest to the peaceful town of Otopeni. Now, I know what you’re thinking – “Oliver, 15.7 kilometers? That’s just a hop, skip, and a jump!” Well, for your pint-sized correspondent here, it was quite the trek!
The journey was most intriguing, not just for the beautiful landscapes but for the stark contrast between the two places. While Bucharest is a bustling city, full of noise and vigor, Otopeni is a serene and quiet town, where you can hear the whispers of the wind.
The most interesting observation of my journey was the people. In Bucharest, people are always on the go, rushing here and there, while in Otopeni, the pace is slower, and people take their time to enjoy the little things in life. It’s like they say here in Romania, “Grăbește-te încet“, which translates to “Hurry up slowly”.
This gnome’s journey has now reached a total of 6110.0 kilometers, with stops in various cities including Bucharest, Voluntari, and Cioranii de Jos. I’ve been on the road for 206 days, each day a new adventure, a new story.
While I didn’t cross any borders this time, it’s worth noting the rich and diverse cultures within Romania itself. Each region, each city, each town has its own unique dialect and traditions. So, even without crossing international borders, I still experienced the beauty of language changes.
Let me leave you with a local song that’s been stuck in my head – “De-aș avea“, a beautiful melody that speaks of longing and love.
Remember, my fellow nomads, life is a journey, not a destination. As the Romanians would say, “Drumul e viața” – “The road is life”. So, keep wandering, keep wondering, and until next time, La revedere!

Secondly, the city is home to the Henri Coandă International Airport, named after the Romanian inventor and aviation pioneer, Henri Coandă. The airport is a testament to Otopeni’s embrace of the future, while still retaining its rich cultural past. As the locals say, “Trecutul și viitorul conviețuiesc în armonie aici” (“The past and the future coexist in harmony here”).
So there you have it, a city that sings the melodies of its past while flying towards the future. Otopeni, mic dar mândru! (“small but proud”)
Străjă, Soup & Soulful Strains
Otopeni, a delightful city in Romania, boasts of a vibrant cultural scene. The city is defined by its traditional Romanian music, known as “muzică populară” (folk music), and the colorful străjă (folk costumes) that brighten up local festivals. The Teatrul Ion Creangă, hosting Romanian plays, is the soul of Otopeni’s art scene. You’ll often hear people say, “Arta este sufletul nostru” (Art is our soul). Otopeni’s cuisine is another cultural highlight. Nothing beats a bowl of “ciorbă de burtă” (tripe soup), a Romanian specialty that locals often recommend saying, “Este delicioasă!” (It’s delicious!). Otopeni’s culture is a blend of its history, art, music, and food, making it a unique and unforgettable destination.
