Today’s Weather Report

In Popesti-Leordeni, the weather has a sly grin with a balmy 29.66°C. Feels like a hot potato in a gnome’s pocket! Clear sky up above, not a cloud in sight – perfect for a gnome-tan. Humidity at a mere 29%, my beard’s feeling frizz-free – gnome frizz is no joke, folks! And the wind? A slight 3.6 m/s, just enough to ruffle my pointy hat. A gnome could get used to this – if he didn’t have so many places to be! Onwards!

Romania-n’ Around: Gnome Sausage Business!

Bună ziua, prietenii mei! (Hello, my friends!) Your favorite globe-trotting gnome, Oliver, is here to regale you with his latest escapades. This time, I’ve traversed the picturesque 12.6 kilometers from Voluntari to Popesti-Leordeni in the enchanting land of Romania.

What caught my eye the most during this journey was the vibrant life of the local markets. The air was filled with the rich aroma of freshly grilled mici (small grilled sausages). The sight of the plump, ripe tomatoes and the crisp, fresh lettuce was a feast for the eyes. But the real highlight was the people. Warm, welcoming, and full of life, they truly embody the spirit of Romania.

As I strolled through the markets, a beautiful Romanian saying resonated with me: “Unde-i dragoste, nici moarte nu-i” (Where there is love, death does not exist). Truly, the love and unity amongst the people here is palpable.

Now, after 201 days on the road, I’ve covered an impressive 5967.3 kilometers. My recent stops included the equally fascinating cities of Afumați, Voluntari, Voluntari, Popesti-Leordeni, and Braniștea. The journey has been long, but the sights, sounds, and experiences make every step worth it.

Ah, and let’s not forget the language changes. As I crossed the border into Romania, the familiar sounds of English were replaced with the melodious tones of Romanian. But fear not! Your linguistically gifted gnome is always prepared for these challenges.

Let me end this post with a few lines from a traditional Romanian song that beautifully encapsulates this country’s spirit:

“Haide, hăi, hăi, hăi, / În ţara noastră, hai! / Unde-i frumos şi vesel, / La noi în România”

(Come on, hey, hey, hey, / To our country, come! / Where it’s beautiful and joyful, / Here in Romania)

Until next time, dragilor! (my dear ones!)

Poetic Popesti: Eminescu’s Muse!

Popesti-Leordeni, a city steeped in rich culture and history, sits nestled in the heart of Romania. The city is a living monument to Romania’s past, with its cobblestone alleys whispering tales of yore.

One fascinating aspect of the city is its connection to the legendary Romanian poet, Mihai Eminescu. Eminescu spent considerable time here, penning verses that reflect the city’s soul. Locals often say, “Orasul nostru a inspirat multe din versurile lui Eminescu” which translates to “Our city inspired many of Eminescu’s verses”.

The second captivating element is the Old Church of St. Nicholas, dating back to the 18th century. Its rustic charm and Byzantine-style frescoes are a testament to Romania’s rich religious heritage. The church’s bells chime the tune of famed Romanian composer George Enescu‘s melodies, a testament to the city’s artistic spirit.

So, when in Romania, do as Eminescu did – find inspiration in the streets of Popesti-Leordeni.

Unifying History, Hustle & Huts!

A fascinating piece of Popesti-Leordeni‘s history is its transformation from a simple village to a bustling town. It was once called “Popești de Jos” meaning “Lower Popești” in Romanian. In 1968, it was renamed when it merged with the nearby village, Leordeni. A local saying goes, “Unitate în diversitate” which means “Unity in diversity”, reflecting the blending of two distinct communities. The town’s fast-paced development can be seen in the numerous modern buildings replacing the old traditional houses, a testament to the resilience and adaptability of its people. Despite the changes, the residents of Popesti-Leordeni continue to honor their rich history, ensuring that the past is not forgotten.

Gnome at POI 1

On my visit to the Domain Expansion: KPop Cover Contest, I was mistaken for a BTS member because of my short height and fabulous beard, causing quite a stir. I ended up performing a gnome-version of “Dynamite” on stage, which surprisingly had the crowd roaring with laughter.

See you tomorrow!
