My Epic Journey So Far
Today’s Weather Report
Well, Rânca’s weather today is a blazing 21.28°C (feels like they’ve rounded down to 20.95°C just for my sake, how considerate!). As a gnome, I’m only 2 feet tall, so this clear sky is all around me. It’s not just overhead, it’s EVERYWHERE! The humidity is 57%, which makes my beard frizz like a dandelion puff. The wind’s at 1.56 m/s, just enough to rustle my pointy hat. Good thing I’m made of sturdy stuff and not prone to toppling! ‘Tis a fine day to be a gnome, I tell ya!
Romanian Roving: Gnome Alone!
I’ve just completed a 28.1km trek from Petroșani to the delightful mountain resort town of Rânca. The scenery was a breathtaking blend of rolling hills and towering peaks, blanketed in a lush green that seemed to stretch into infinity.
But what struck me most was the “Mioritic Space” – a term coined by our Romanian philosopher Lucian Blaga to describe the unique spiritual landscape of the Romanian soul, shaped by the pastoral, serene, and eternal landscapes. As I ambled along the path, I could feel it – the peaceful rhythm of nature, the pastoral serenity, the quiet eternity.
Now, a little local flavor for you: There’s a Romanian saying, “Unde-i năna, acolo-i rai”, which translates to “Where the godmother is, there’s heaven.” I think it perfectly encapsulates the warmth and hospitality I’ve experienced here.
Our journey has covered 5695.4 kilometers over the course of 189 days! From Deva to Bănița, then Petroșani and now Rânca, and finally Vaideeni. Each place has its own charm, its own story etched in my gnome heart.
As I walked towards Rânca, the lyrics of a local folk song echoed in my mind, “Pe sub flori ma legănam…” which means, “Under the flowers, I was swinging…” It’s a song about the beauty of nature and the joy of being alive – a feeling that is so present in this journey of ours.
Until next time, keep your hearts open and your spirits high! La revedere!

Rânca: Peaks, Leaps, and Beats!
Firstly, the breathtaking Transalpina Road, or “Drumul Regelui” (King’s Road), which is the highest road in the country. It offers views that would make even the most grumpy gnome (like yours truly!) marvel at the beauty of nature.
Secondly, Rânca is home to the traditional Transylvanian dances, a true spectacle for any visitor. These dances, accompanied by the music of George Enescu, Romania’s most celebrated composer, are a deep dive into the heart of Romanian culture.
In the words of our beloved poet Mihai Eminescu, “Sunt vremuri din viață când te oprești ca să te întrebi unde ești și încotro te îndrepți” (There are times in life when you stop to ask yourself where you are and where you’re going). Here in Rânca, I found my answer.
Romanian Rambles: Gnome-sized Greetings!
Greetings from Romania, land of intriguing history and vibrant culture! Let’s dive into a mini Romanian language lesson.
1. “Bună ziua” (BOO-nuh ZEE-wah) – This means “Good day”! It’s a perfect greeting to start your day with the friendly locals here.
2. “Mulţumesc” (mool-tzoo-MESK) – This means “Thank you”. It’s always good to show gratitude, especially when you’re enjoying some “sarmale” (stuffed cabbage rolls)!
3. “Unde este…?” (OON-deh YEST-eh) – This means “Where is…?” Handy for finding your way around the beautiful cobbled streets.
In Rânca, you might hear “ce faci, mă?” (cheh FAH-chee MAH) – a casual “how are you, mate?” Just don’t use it with the elderly, it’s a bit too informal!
Fun fact: Romanian is a Romance language, with similarities to French, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese. So if you know a bit of those, you’ll have a head start!
Remember, a gnome-sized effort in language can lead to giant-sized friendships! Happy learning!
