Today’s Weather Report

Day 183 in Beiuș and it’s hotter than a dragon’s burp at 28.29°C. Feels more like 28.24°C to my gnome-y senses, though. Just a smattering of clouds, like the crumbs from a giant’s biscuit. Not much humidity – only 44%. My beard’s as brittle as a twig! The wind’s a gentle 2.8 m/s, barely enough to ruffle my pointy hat. Perfect weather if you’re a sun-loving gnome, but I’d better find some shade before I turn into a garden roast!

Roamin’ Gnome in Romania!

Bună ziua, fellow wanderers! It’s your favorite globetrotting gnome, Oliver, here, charting a course through the heart of Romania! Today, I shuffled my little gnome feet 20.5km from the quaint village of Dobrești to the bustling town of Beiuș.

What a journey it has been! The landscapes of Romania are as diverse as they are beautiful. From the quiet charm of Dobrești’s countryside, I ambled through sunflower fields and apple orchards, serenaded by the sweet songs of the Eurasian skylark.

But there was one sight that truly captured my gnome heart: the Sunset over the Apuseni Mountains. As the day’s last light bathed the peaks in a warm, golden glow, I was struck by the sheer beauty of nature. As the local poet Ion Minulescu once wrote, “Și totuși… vine toamna, mai frumoasă decât orice!” (“And yet… autumn comes, more beautiful than anything!”). It’s a quote that perfectly encapsulates the breathtaking panorama I had the privilege to witness.

This was a mere fraction of my journey that has spanned 5476.6 kilometers so far! From the Hungarian charm of Békés to the Romanian allure of Salonta, Dobrești, and Ștei, every step has been an adventure. 182 days on the road and I still can’t get enough!

Even though I’ve only crossed borders in the past, it’s important to mention that the language changes were equally fascinating. From the Hungarian spoken in Békés to the Romanian language that rings through the streets of Beiuș, it’s been an interesting linguistic journey as well.

Until next time, remember this beautiful Romanian proverb: “Unde nu-i cap, vai de picioare!” (“Where there’s no head, the feet suffer”). So keep your heads high and your hearts open, my friends!

La revedere and keep wandering!

Beiuș: Cathedral, Coșbuc, and Cucumbers!

Day 182: I’ve just sauntered into Beiuș, a city teeming with culture and history. One cannot help but be smitten with the Orthodox Cathedral, a grand testament to the city’s faith and architecture. They say, “Frumusețea este în ochii privitorului” (Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder), and oh, what a sight to behold!

The city is also steeped in literary history. It was here that the great poet George Coșbuc penned some of his most profound verses. As I strolled the streets, I could almost hear his quill scratching paper, whispering “Nimic fără Dumnezeu”(Nothing without God) in the wind. Now, as a gnome, I’m not religious, but I do appreciate a good verse.

Beiuș is more than just a city; it’s a living museum, a melody composed by time and culture. And as I continue my journey, I carry its rhythm in my heart. Și acum, la revedere Beiuș (And now, goodbye Beiuș)!

Early Riser, Transylvanian Cruiser

Beiuș, a cultural jewel nestled in the heart of Transylvania, is defined by its rich heritage and warm-hearted locals. The city’s cultural scene is a vibrant blend of Romanian traditions and modern influences. Here, they say “Cine se trezește de dimineață, departe ajunge” – “Who gets up early, goes far.” The city’s pride is the grand Orthodox Cathedral, a testament to faith and resilience. It’s a city where old meets new, where the traditional art of embroidery is as celebrated as the annual Beiuș Festival that attracts bands and artists nationwide. As I strolled through the bustling farmers market, I heard the heartfelt greeting, “Bună dimineața” – “Good morning.” Here, the past is honored, the present is vibrant, and the future looks promising!

Beiuș: Gnomad’s Wonderland

Gnome at POI 1

During my visit to Balta din Deal, I almost mistook myself for a duck, given how much time I spent waddling in the marshy waters! There, I met a frog who claimed to be a prince, I told him, “My dear froggy, I might be a gnome, but I’m not gullible!

See you tomorrow!
