Today’s Weather Report

Day 173 in Nagykáta, and the clouds have decided to throw a non-stop party. It’s a cool 12.14°C, but feels like 11.97°C – a gnome’s whisker difference! The humidity’s at a whopping 98%; my beard’s so damp it could water a cactus. The wind’s blowing at 5.2 m/s, making my hat do the jitterbug. But hey, being a gnome, I’ve got the best seat in the house, right under the sky’s dramatic performance! Cloud-watching, anyone?

Gnome Among the Sunflowers!

Szia kedves olvasók! (Hello dear readers!) Your favorite globe-trotting gnome, Oliver, is back to regale you with tales of his adventure. Today, I’m excited to share about my 23.8km journey from the charming town of Monor to the vibrant city of Nagykáta in the heart of Hungary.

Nagykáta, a city with a rich history, was my destination. But as always, the journey was just as exciting as the destination. As I was trudging along, I saw a sight that made my small gnome heart flutter with joy. There were sunflowers, fields upon fields of them, a living, breathing sea of yellow, swaying gently under the Hungarian sun. It was a sight to behold, and I stood there, mesmerized by the spectacle. As a famous Hungarian saying goes, “Aki szépet lát, szívébe zár” (He who sees beauty, keeps it in his heart).

Now, I’ve been on this beautiful earth for 172 days, visited cities like Szentendre, Budapest, and Cegléd, and walked a whopping 5203.7 kilometers. I must say, my journey from Monor to Nagykáta was certainly one of the highlights.

I did not cross any borders on this leg of the journey, but I am looking forward to the day when I do, and I can share with you the thrill of experiencing a new language and culture.

Here’s a traditional Hungarian song that I heard from the locals and it goes like this: “Fenn a dombtetőn, van egy kis ház” (Up on the hilltop, there is a small house). I find this song fitting, as it resonates with my journey, a small gnome wandering the vast world.

Well, that’s all for today, my dear readers. Remember, “A cél a fontos, nem az út” (The goal is important, not the road). Until next time, keep wandering and keep wondering!

Viszlát! (Goodbye!)

Nagykáta: Gnome’s Thermal Haven!

Ah, Nagykáta, a petite gem gleaming in the heart of Hungary! My tiny gnome feet took me there, and I was swept up by its rich culture and history.

Firstly, the town is known for its Thermal Bath or “Termálfürdő“. The warm, mineral-rich waters are a sight to behold and a feel to… well, feel! As the Hungarian composer Franz Liszt might’ve said, it’s like a symphony for the senses!

Secondly, it’s home to the majestic Reformed Church. This architectural marvel dates back to the late 18th century. If walls could talk, eh? They’d probably recite verses from Sándor Petőfi, Hungary’s national poet.

Az Isten áldjon, édes jó anyám…” – “God bless you, my sweet good mother…” – resonates deeply in Nagykáta, a place that feels like home, even to a wandering gnome like me!

Busó Busting Winter Blues!

In Nagykáta, I discovered the fascinating tradition of Busójárás. It’s a carnival-style event where locals dress as Busó (masked creatures) and make noise to scare off winter. A procession of these Busó, led by a Jankele (a devil-like figure), is truly a sight to behold! One local phrase I picked up was “A tél végét ünnepeljük“, which translates to “We celebrate the end of winter”. This tradition, deep-rooted in local folklore, is an exhilarating display of community spirit that brings warmth to the cold Hungarian winter.

Gnome’s Guide: Nagykáta Nuggets

Gnome at POI 1

Ah, the Nagykáta legidősebb fája, or in gnome tongue, ‘The Old Tree of the East’! I recall trying to measure its girth with my tiny arms and giving up halfway through, muttering, “I’ve seen smaller elephant waists!” Quite the workout, if you’re a gnome!

See you tomorrow!
