Today’s Weather Report

Ah, Hartberg! Perfect gnome-tanning weather at 22.41°C, even though my stone skin feels it more like 21.65°C. Just a few clouds in the sky, probably trying to hide from my radiant charisma. The humidity is at a welcoming 36% – low enough to keep my pointy hat crisp, but high enough to give my beard a nice curl. The wind hums a gentle 3.05 m/s tune, barely enough to ruffle my trousers. Ideal conditions for a gnome on the roam!

Brettljause Binge in Austria!

Guten Tag, liebe Freunde! That’s “Good day, dear friends!” in the local lingo. Get ready for another chapter of my adventures as your globetrotting garden gnome.

Graz to Hartberg, Austria, a journey of 46.8km, was an enlightening experience. I traversed through the lush Styrian countryside that was a feast for the eyes. But the real feast, both literally and figuratively, was the discovery of a quaint local tradition. In a small village that I passed through, I found an old couple hosting what they called a ‘Brettljause’. It’s a traditional Austrian snack platter loaded with local cold cuts, cheeses, pickles, and bread. It was an interesting observation, how the community gathered around this hearty meal, sharing stories and laughter, the camaraderie was palpable.

As I enjoyed my Brettljause, I mused, “Das Leben ist wie eine Brettljause, man weiß nie was man bekommt.” That’s “Life is like a Brettljause, you never know what you’re going to get,” a philosophical musing inspired by the surprise elements on the snack platter.

Now, after 149 days on the road, my little gnome-feet have taken me 4598.5 kilometers across Europe. From the vineyards of Maribor, to the charming town of Leibnitz, the bustling city of Graz, and now, the tranquil Hartberg, I have seen and learned so much.

One local song that has been playing in my head as I walked these miles goes, “Komm, hol das Lasso raus, wir spielen Cowboy und Indianer.” That means, “Come on, get the lasso out, we’re playing Cowboys and Indians.” It’s a playful tune that captures the spirit of adventure that I am experiencing.

So, here’s to more adventures, more discoveries and more Brettljause! Bis zum nächsten Mal! (Until next time!)

Hartberg: Cobblestones and Yodel Tunes!

Day 149: Hartberg, Austria.

Ah, Hartberg, a city steeped in rich culture and history. Two things stand out here: the city’s historical centre and the famed Ringwarte tower.

The historical centre is a time capsule, with buildings dating back to the Middle Ages. One can almost hear the ghostly whispers of the past while wandering its cobblestone streets. “Geschichte ist überall” as the Austrians say – “History is everywhere.”

Then there’s the Ringwarte – a tower with breathtaking panoramic views. As I climbed, I couldn’t help but hum a tune by Austria’s own Franz Schubert: “Die schöne Müllerin”. A heavenly experience, or as they say here, “ein himmlisches Erlebnis”.

Hartberg, you’re a city that’s as captivating as a verse by Rainer Maria Rilke. But remember, it’s not just the place, but the gnome who visits it!

“Reisen ist Leben, so wie umgekehrt Leben Reisen ist.”
“Travel is life, as conversely life is travel.”

Buttermilk Journeys & Strudel Stories!

In Hartberg, Austrian cuisine thrives. The city offers a unique spin on traditional dishes, making them a ‘Mahlzeit’ (meal) to remember. The Buschenschank culture, offering homegrown wine and homemade food, is a gem. Don’t miss the Steirischer Backhendl, a local twist on fried chicken. The secret? Marinating it in Buttermilch (buttermilk) before frying. And for dessert? Apfelstrudel – not just apple pie, but a love letter to the humble apple. ‘Guten Appetit’, or as we say in Austria, ‘Mahlzeit‘!

Gnome’s Guide to Hartberg Highlights

Gnome at POI 1

During my visit to the Reckturm, I tried to climb it thinking it was a stairmaster, only to realize it’s a 13th-century watchtower. “I’m not as young as I used to be,” I wheezed to a local pigeon, “but this view is worth every single gnomely pant!”

See you tomorrow!
