Today’s Weather Report

Day 142, Trebnje: The sky’s as cloudy as my morning grump, a perfect match to my gnome beard – overcast! At 21.27°C, feels like my baked gnome toes are getting a breather. Better than being a gnome-icicle or a gnome-sicle, eh? The 61% humidity’s got my hat curling, but that’s just the latest fashion in gnome-town. And the wind speed at 2.29 m/s? Perfect for a gnome-kite! Now, where did I leave my handkerchief?

Bee-lieving in Gnome-adic Tales

Dobrodošli prijatelji! (Welcome friends!)

Today, I’ve grumpily shuffled my gnome feet through a 42.6km journey from Ljubljana, the heart of Slovenia, to the charming town of Trebnje. A journey filled with beautiful landscapes, rustic houses and friendly locals who were kind enough to not confuse me with a lawn ornament.

One interesting observation that caught my gnome eyes was the prevalence of beekeeping in Slovenia. It’s not every day you stroll by beautifully painted beehives, each telling its own story. It’s a tradition here, and I can’t help but admire the love Slovenians have for these hardworking insects. So, the next time you enjoy a spoonful of honey, remember you might be tasting a little piece of Slovenia!

“Čebela je simbol slovenske delavnosti.” (The bee is a symbol of Slovenian industriousness.) – A local beekeeper.

Ljubljana was a delight, but every journey must continue. I’ve previously enjoyed the beauty of Trieste, the mystery of Cerknica and the vibrant life in Samobor. Each city leaving its own unique footprint in my gnome heart.

“Potovanje je edini strošek, ki te naredi bogatejšega.” (Traveling is the only expense that makes you richer.) – Slovenian saying.

In total, my journey has covered 4282.6 kilometers in 142 days. Not bad for a gnome with little legs, eh? I’ve learned so much, made countless friends and have been mistaken for a garden ornament more times than I can count. But, as they say in Slovenia, “Vsaka pot je cilj.” (Every journey is a goal.)

Until the next time, when I probably have more bee facts and bad gnome jokes to share.

Nasvidenje! (Goodbye!)

Trebnje: Charmingly Naïve!

Greetings from Trebnje, a precious gem nestled in the heart of Slovenia! First off, this city is known for its Gallery of Naive Artists, a unique repository of art that celebrates the untrained, yet passionate spirit of Slovenian artists. Among them is the renowned Emerik Bernard, whose love for art was as vivid as the colors on his canvas. As the locals say, “Vsak slikar riše, kot sam misli,” which translates to, “Every painter paints as he himself thinks.”

Secondly, the Parish Church of the Assumption stands tall in Trebnje, a testament to the city’s rich history. This gothic architectural marvel dates back to the 14th century and houses the masterpieces of Jože Plečnik, a famed Slovenian architect. In the words of Plečnik, “Arhitektura je umetnost urejanja prostora,” which means, “Architecture is the art of arranging space.”

Stay tuned, as Trebnje has more to reveal!

Trebnje: Ageless Beauty, Canvas City

In the heart of Slovenia, lies the quaint town of Trebnje, teeming with rich culture and history. One cannot speak of Trebnje without mentioning its prized possession – the Church of the Assumption of Mary, dating back to the 15th century. Its walls whisper tales of a bygone era, encapsulated by the phrase “Stara sem, a še vedno lepa” (I’m old, but still beautiful). A striking figure in its history is the legendary Ivan Grohar, a prominent Slovenian impressionist painter who found solace and inspiration in Trebnje’s serene landscapes. His famous quote, “Moje platno je moje ogledalo” (My canvas is my mirror), speaks volumes about his deep connection with this town. A walking tour through Trebnje is like stepping into the canvas of a beautiful painting, filled with historical hues and cultural strokes.

Trebnje’s Tiny Wonders

Gnome at POI 1

Well, when I visited Zijalo, I had an unexpected encounter with a local seagull who mistook me for a shiny fish. Let’s just say, I now have a newfound respect for the phrase “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush”, although I’d argue, a gnome in the beak is worth a thousand laughs!

See you tomorrow!
