Today’s Weather Report

Ah, Benavente! A crisp 14.26°C nips at my porcelain cheeks while the clear sky reflects in my polished gnome hat. Feels more like 13.05°C if you ask me, but then again, I’m a gnome, I’m always a bit cooler! The wind sweeps at a brisk 7.37 m/s, perfect for a gnome kite-flying session. And the humidity? 50%. Ideal for maintaining my impeccable gnome complexion. This weather might send humans indoors, but for a gnome, it’s a perfect day for adventure!

Flamingo Frolics and Gnome Gallivants

Bom dia, my steadfast followers! It’s your favorite globetrotting gnome, Oliver. I’ve just completed a 21.8km trek from the vibrant town of Alverca do Ribatejo to the charming village of Benavente, here in beautiful Portugal.

Truth be told, the journey was as interesting as a garden gnome’s hat – full of surprises. But what really caught my eye was the Tagus Estuary Natural Reserve, a captivating wetland brimming with life. We gnomes have a soft spot for nature, and let me tell you, this place is a veritable paradise!

I saw countless birds, each more fascinating than the last. But the real treat? Witnessing a flock of flamingos gracefully taking flight. As they say here in Portugal, “As coisas mais simples são as mais extraordinárias” (The simplest things are the most extraordinary). And indeed, it was extraordinary.

Now, let’s take a moment to reflect on my journey so far. I’ve been on the road for 5 days, strolling my way through 75.5 kilometers of breathtaking scenery. From the bustling streets of Lisbon, making a double stop there (because, why not?), to the verdant pathways of Alverca do Ribatejo, and now, the quaint charm of Benavente.

One thing I’ve learned in my travels is a beautiful Portuguese saying, “A vida é uma viagem“, life is a journey. And just like life, it’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey. So, here’s to many more kilometers and countless more adventures!

Next stop, Marinhais. But for now, I leave you with a bit of local wisdom, “Quem não arrisca, não petisca” (He who doesn’t risk, doesn’t snack). So, go out there and take a bite out of life!

Ate breve! (See you soon!)

Benavente: Fado, Ruins and Regal Raves!

Ah, Benavente! An enchanting city with a soul as deep as the Tagus River that flows nearby. My wee gnome feet trod its cobblestones, taking in the rich tapestry of its past.

Firstly, the Palace of Benavente or “Palácio de Benavente” in local tongue, a stunning 15th-century edifice, now in ruins but once the stage for royal festivities. Legend has it that King Manuel I, awed by its beauty, exclaimed, “Este é o verdadeiro palácio do rei!” (“This is the true king’s palace!”).

Secondly, the city’s love for Fado, a traditional music genre, is infectious. Its melancholic tunes echo through its quaint streets, a poignant reminder of the city’s history. It’s as if the soul of Amália Rodrigues, Portugal’s famed Fado singer, lingers in the air.

Benavente is not just a city; it’s a living poem, a lyrical verse in the grand epic of Portugal’s history.

Dances, Towers, and Stone Soup!

Benavente, situated in the heart of Portugal, is a hub of rich tradition and history. The city’s cultural scene is defined by its vibrant Festas de Samora, a local festival filled with music and dance. The phrase “Faz favor de dançar?” (Would you like to dance?) is commonly heard during this time. The city is also home to the historical Torre de Benavente, a testament to its medieval past. Locals would say, “Visita a torre!” (Visit the tower!). The cuisine, such as the popular sopa da pedra (stone soup), offers a distinct flavor of the region. As a gnome, I am truly enchanted by the city’s unique blend of history, festivities, and gastronomy. From the lively dances to the flavorful soups, Benavente certainly offers a cultural feast!

Oh, you wouldn’t believe the sight at the Rotunda do Campino! I tried to blend in with a flock of pigeons, but they pecked at my hat thinking it was bread! The irony! Good thing, I’m not made of breadcrumbs. As they say, “When in Rome, do as the pigeons do“.

See you tomorrow!
